Ribbon Academy of the Gifted
Well...I don't know were this came from its an oddity for me as I usually do Fanfic, and never over here. But I decided that hey Doll Divine might be just a good place to start.
Note: this story has a lot of Japanese anime/manga influence, an good example of this is that in Japanese High School is something you have to apply for and try and get into the right school.
Summary:
Maril Brakme has lived all of her life with her mom over the little mechanic shop her mother runs. She grew up fast with just her and her mother for the earliest years of her life, and now its time for her to move on to High School. Ribbon Academy of the Gifted is one of the most prestigious high schools in the country, but it isn't were Maril pictured herself going. But when they offered her a full scholarship, it was kind of hard to say no.
Chapter 1
Maril bobbed her head as she listened to the loud beat pounding out of her head phones. Her sky blue eyes staring at the blur outside her window. She ignored the other passengers crowed into the train. At her feet a suit case sat one hand absently taping its handle in time with the music she was listening too. Turning her head she hummed to the song playing absently as she surveyed the other passengers.
A group of men in business suits gathered and standing to the side, probably heading out to get a drink after work. A college student who had a test she wasn't prepared for, she was franticly looking back and forth between to thick books. A couple of young punks with their eye liner on just a little too thick looking to get into some trouble.
With a small chuckle to herself the turned back to the dark blur outside her window. At least it doesn’t smell...to bad she absently thought to herself wishing she had decided to take an earlier train. But she had that one last project she had wanted to get finished before she left.
It had been a tough decision to go to a high school so far from her home, but with a full linguistics scholarship to one of the best who was she to say no. Languages were child’s play to her, and always had been. One of the many gifts given to her by her 'father'.
She let out a sigh at that though before blinking and smiling as a blur of white broke up the darkness of the surroundings before disappearing. Abivi was playing around outside the train, he could have simply rode on her shoulder but of course instead he had to fly instead. show off... she though with a fond chuckle as the white blur of her familiar made another appearance.
It was a good thing Ribbon had courses made for Trace, other wise she would have turned them down regardless of the scholarship. To be a Trace was to have a familiar. Or rather it was when a creature of magic decided to bond to a human, thus granting them the gift of magic. These people were called Trace, because a familiar first finds a trace of magic that they follow to their human.
Well...that’s how it normally went, but as always Maril had gone against the grain. She had found a trapped Abivi on a camping trip only two years ago. Twelve was quite old to become a Trace, most of the time it happened around a child’s fifth or sixth birthday. Abivi had been a stubborn thing, and Maril had the scar on her hand from were she had gotten to close to him to soon.
Smiling and propping her chin on her hand she couldn't help but remember how he had looked all drenched from the rain twisted in the hunters net, soaked to the bone and obviously in pain but still full of fight and not scared of her in the least. She blinked as she felt the train begin to slow and looking around realized she must not have heard the announcement for the stop...which she really shouldn't have been surprised about she ideally thought as he adjusted her head phones before turning around to grab the handle of her bag.
Standing just as the train pulled into the station she pulled it along behind her on its wheels as she stepped off the train picking up the bag to lift it onto the platform. Humming in tune to the next song on her iPod she looked around at the deserted station before striding forward towards the exit. She had a dorm room on campus, all she had to do was get there.
One hour latter she was regretting her decision to take the late train even more. It had taken her a good fifteen minuets to flag down a taxi, and another five to convince him that she had the money to pay him. The streets were packed with people, so the going was slow.
Now here she stood staring at the very closed gates to the academy. Of course they would have locked gates, why wouldn't they? She thought to herself frowning at the fence. It was too late to get a right into town and find a motel, as the cab had left as soon as she'd gotten out of it.
Not that she had money for a motel room anyway. With a sigh she considered her options. "Well...this could have gone better." She muttered to herself under her breath.
"Of course it could have, we could have gotten here when we were supposed to. You know before the sun set?" A voice echoed into her mind. Rolling her eyes Maril said "You don't say Abivi?" turning her blue gaze to her familiar that was now perched on her shoulder.
"You know I told you this would happen." Abivi added threw their mental link, one of the ways a familiar and Trace communicated to one another. “Yes yes you did, now that we’ve agreed its my fault have any bright ideas about were to sleep?” Maril responded rolling her eyes.
Abivi ruffled his feathers before looking off to the side of the paved drive way were they were standing “Oh come on! I really don’t want to rough it!” Maril complained even as she grabbed her bag and trudged up into the woods that ran along side the fence.
“Then you should have made sure to get her on time!” The irate familiar responded with a huff. Maril let out a sigh as she walked a little farther into the woods before setting her bag to the side and promptly sitting down on the ground causing Abivi to flap his wings to keep his balance.
“Yeah yeah, come on Abivi lets try and get at least a little rest.” Maril said with a yawn and a stretch. Abivi settled on the ground beside his Trace before shaking his head and suddenly he was large enough to wrap said Trace up in his wings.
“Night Abivi…” Maril said snuggling into his warm feathers, Abivi only made a huffing sound in response.
