THE PLANET AND PEOPLE OF DENARIA
The planet
Overview: Denaria (locally known as Ikmyeth, known to humans as Gliese 667Cc) orbits the red dwarf Gliese 667C in the constaliation Scorpius roughly twenty four light years away from Earth. Gliese 667Cc has two moons and there are two other planets in the star system. Gliese 667Cc is slightly larger than earth and the gravity is slightly stronger. The years are around twenty eight days long and the days are ten days long. The planet is warmer than earth but recieves only 20% of the light that is found on earth. Solar flares are very common and there is a lack of UV radiation.<( ) />
Terrain, seasons and climate: Gliese 667Cc is younger than earth and more primordal, and the terrian is extremely rugged. The planet is covered in canyons, mountains and jagged hills, and there is very little flat land to speak of, though there is comperably more to the north than the south. The planet is much rockier than earth and there are fewer oceans, while there are large lakes found in canyons and gullies. There is a more pronounced axis tilt than on earth and as a result the seasons are more vaired: there are extreme seasons in the north, with as much as an eighty degree (celsius) difference between summer and winter, while there is only a rainy season and a dry season around the equator of the planet. Thunderstorms are common on the planet, with or without rain.
Suns and moons: Gliese 667 Cc orbits the star Gliese 667C, which is in fact a triple star system. The stars Gliese 667A and Gliese 667B both orbit one another, while Gliese 667C orbits the other two. As a result, Gliese 667Cc appears to have a triple star, though the stars A and B appear very small and do not impact the light on the planet to a great extent (a bit like Mercury and Venus appearing as stars in our own night sky, though slightly more pronounced). Gliese 667 C is a dim star and the light on Denaria appears reddish-orange, and there is very little UV radiation. There are two moons orbiting the planet, with one appearing slightly larger than our own and one appearing slightly smaller.
Flora and fauna: There is very little flora or fauna to be found around the equator, and that which is there is extremely hardy. Plants are generally low growing and are usually found around lakes and oceans. The sheltered bays around lakes and oceans are the only places where trees and larger plants will be found. To the poles there are more plants, though life must be equally tough to survive the extreme temperatures. There is very little advanced animal life on Gliese 667 Cc and almost all herbivores and omnivores that can be domesticated have been. Herbivores and omnivores are generally very passive, though carnivores are generally extremely vicious and have resisted any attempts at domestication.
The people
Anatomy: The people of Denaria are humanoid and have a body system very similar to a human. They are sexually diamorphic, lack tails and have multiple blood types. Denarians have a similar eye structure than humans, but their green eyesight is diminished and they are adapted to see in darker lighting situations due to the darker nature of their planet. They have a second, clear eyelid that protects their eye from sand and duststorms and have thick eyelashes. Their teeth are all quite sharp, noticably more so than humans due to the levels of meat consumed in their diet.
Life cycle: Their pregnancy is shorter than a human's, lasting only around six earth months. Denarian childbirth is dangerous due to the narrow pelvis of female Denarians and natural birth has become extremely rare, almost taboo. Infancy lasts until roughly nine months old, and childhood lasts until the age of ten. Children finish growing at around fifteen years of age and are generally continued adults at this time. They live until roughly seventy years of age.
Apperance: Denarians are generally quite small, with the average height being approximately 158 cm for males and 155 cm for females (5'2/5'1). They are generally slender and have slightly large head in proportion to their natural height. They have delicate facial features and the eyes are solid black, without pupil or iris and sometimes show undershades of purple, red or blue. Their skin is generally red, violet or blue, in various different shades depending on if the person originates from the north or south of the planet. Their hair is dark and often mirrors their eye colour. They have little body hair when compared to humans and men are incapable of growing facial hair. Sometimes Denarians, in particular males, lack hair altogether. There is less difference between the sexes than found in humans: males have higher voices than a human man and females have lower voices. Males tend to have slightly more body fat than a human male and females generally have narrower hips and smaller ( )easts than a human female.
Behavior
Religion: There are two major religions among the Denarian people. They have similar ties and origins, however, and there are gods that can be found in both of the beliefs. The Denarians to the north have a folk religion that is less formally practiced, with elders of the village generally tending to shrines that are found in the surrounding areas. They do not have a creator god, and gods are generally different depending on the villages that they are found in, though similarities have been noted and there are gods that carry over the entire population. Gods are often seen as vengeful or malevolent, and death is seen as negative, and as a result people often attempt to 'tie' their spirit or soul to the temples or shrines in the village so that when they die their spirit will not be forced to wander. Many gods are seen as two-faced or as twins. The southern Denarian religion is very similar to that found in the north, save more organized and with more routine, while death is seen as less negative, though still generally feared.
Caste system: There is a firm caste system in place in Denaria, though this has diminished over the years. There are seven classes in place: two noble classes, a scholar or priestly class, a soldier's class, a merchants class, a farmers class and a pesants class. They mostly dictate the person's position in society and their style of dress: it gets less and less elaborate every caste that goes down (the exception to this is the scholar/priests class which dresses in very simple styles).
Style of dress: The style of dress depends heavily on the caste, though there are small variations between each one. Among the two highest castes, clothing is generally draping and layered, with many beads and other adornments coating the outfits. They are often extremely elaborate and in ancient times took many months, even a year to craft. Fa( )ic is generally very patterned. Hair is generally long and extremely elaborately ( )aided among females, and clothing is generally quite modest as nudity is extremely taboo in Denarian culture. Sandals or bare feet are traditional. Scholars and priests generally wear tighter-fitting garments, white for priests and black for scholars, as any sort of adornment other than simple ( )aclets is seen as distraction. Higher-ranking priests will generally have some form of adornment that marks them as seperate from the rest, and will generally wear some sort of circlet on their head. The priest class is almost non-existant in northern Denaria as rituals are mostly carried out in the homes. Scholars always have shaved heads regardless of sex while some Priestesses will have longer hair that is tied back. Soldiers generally wear reds and ( )owns, and their clothing generally has loose chests and upper sleeves while the lower sleeves are quite tight as their primary weapon is the bow and arrow and a loose sleeve will prevent the weapon from being easily used. Merchants generally dress in a mixture of the soldier and noble styles, though generally simpler alltogether since they consider it a distraction from the job to be too elaborately dressed. Farmers and peasants generally mimic the style of soldiers. In modern times, the caste system has largely vanished and clothing tends to be tight and efficient. Sheer fa( )ics and dark colours are common, in particular blue.<( ) />
Tattoos: All Denarians have tattoos in some shape or form, regardless of caste. They generally begin with some adornment around the eyes at around ten years of age. This is when scholars and soldiers were traditionally chosen and those two castes would generally not recieve any more tattoos after that point. At fifteen, tattoos on the upper chest and arms would be applied. Lower castes would stop recieveing tattoos here, while some nobles would have tattoos applied on the legs. Chest tattoos are solely found on extremely pious nobles and priests. The style of tattoo depends on region, type of religion practiced and family. Denarians continue to receive tattoos though many stop after recieving the face tattoos at ten.
Authors note: Gliese 667 Cc is a real planet. It's currently the exoplanet that is said to be the most similar to earth, though I did take some liberties with the description. It does orbit a triple star system, and it does lack UV radiation. However, it is likely tidally locked (meaning it does not have days and nights: one side of the planet will always face the sun, and one will always face away). It's also likely that the host star has intense flares, which would make life difficult. There's also a potential for sunspots that would reduce visiblity even further on the planet and the varying light conditions could have an effect on life on the planet. The gravity is also likely 1.6 times as strong as the gravity on earth. It's also entirely possible that Gliese 667 Cc is a gas giant. If I've made any mistakes here, please feel free to correct me. |
