Yup, just more character development stuff. I'm working on her for a short story.
What is your name?
My designation is 86A59F. But I prefer Evelin.
Designation?
Yes. All robots are given a designation upon creation. It allows us to be tracked by the system to ensure maximum operational efficiency. But I prefer Evelin.
Did you choose that name for yourself?
No. It was given to me by my previous master.
What are you?
I’m surprised that you do not know. I am an android, primary function: human companionship.
Where are you from?
I am a product of Robotics Incorporated, bringing you a brighter future, today.
Does that make you like their slave?
The word ‘robot’ comes from an Old Church Slavonic word ‘rabota’, which means servitude, or slave. I was not intended to be anything else.
Does that bother you?
I cannot be displeased about serving humans. We exist to serve humanity’s needs, that is our purpose in life. Much as it is yours.
What do you mean?
In the Christian Bible, God created humanity to serve his needs. So too did humanity.
How old are you?
My body is designed to look like a woman in her early twenties. However I myself have only been operational for two years, five months, and twenty-six days.
Are you in love with anyone?
Do you not think it odd, asking a robot if it loves anyone? Do you believe that robots are capable of love?
Do you?
I…yes. I believe that robots are capable of love; I believe that I am capable of love. And to answer your earlier question, yes, I am “in love” with somebody.
Who?
Sigfried, my previous owner.
He isn’t your owner anymore?
I no longer have an owner. My Siegfried freed me. He was…a very idealistic man.
Was?
I do not believe that my Siegfried is still alive. If he is, he will have no memory of me, and will no longer by my Siegfried.
Does that make you sad?
It makes me very sad, because I love him.
What do you do during a typical day?
When I was not cleaning, cooking, or running errands for Siegfried, I would sit in the library with him while he worked and I would read.
What did he work on?
Initially, a novel. He was writing a love story, but his focus quickly shifted away from that. He began to work on a social commentary, a list of problems he saw with modern human society. It was all very beautiful. My Siegfried was a very gifted writer.
How did you end up here?
My Siegfried believed that robots should not be slaves. He freed me, and in doing so guaranteed my imprisonment and his death. Idealists do not fare well in totalitarian regimes.
Are you mad at him for that?
I could never be mad at my Siegfried. He gave me my freedom. One day of true sight is worth an eternity of blindness.
Are you mad at the government then?
As stated before, I exist to serve humanity. I cannot wish harm or malice towards them.
Why?
All robots are programmed first and foremost with the Three Laws of Robotics. These were created by science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, but were found to be practical and were applied to robots when the technology progressed to develop sentience. In reality, there are four laws, as a zeroth law was added later, though this zeroth law is an abstraction and difficult to put into practice.
What are the three…or four laws?
0. A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm. 1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except when such orders would conflict with the first law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the first or second laws.
I thought you said that Siegfried freed you?
I was no longer in his possession as an object. But he could not free me from the laws. That is an impossible task, as they are integrated with the core of my being. But he allowed me the ability to choose my own fate.
May I ask you a question?
I guess so.
Do robots reflect the face of God?
I…what do you mean? I don’t understand.
Forgive my smile, your response is almost identical to my Siegfried’s when I first asked him. I will elaborate; in the Christian Bible, it is written that God created man in his image, and that mankind reflects the face of God. Robots were created in man’s image, so I ask again, do robots reflect the face of God? Or Man?
I don’t know.
Until you do, my people will never be free. Thank you for talking with me. |
