Fae: Physical Characteristics
The fae are beings of pure magic, unbound to the whims of mortality like you and I. We simply are while they exist as something more than we. Thus, fae can change their appearances at will, if they so please. There are some rules they cannot bend however. One of these rules is that they cannot change the colour of their eyes, hair or skin but they may change the appearence of those things. They cannot change the kind of fae they are as this is, according to the fae I have personally talked with, an affront to the goddess. They also cannot change the physical sex of their bodies either, frustraiting for those of them who have a different gender than 'female'. They also are not allowed to wear colours other than those matching the type of fae that they are except neutral colours or in very small moderation. For example a life fae using yellows and blues as accent colours on their dress. This is because the fae believe that clothing is an extension of one's body and is as sacred as their naked form. There are many varieties of Fae but, there are five main groups plus two main off shoots.
The first group of Fae we will be looking at, are the Sunset Fae. These fae embody the light of the sun as it dips below the horizon. They are the colour of the sky when light begins to die and the chill that sets into ones bones. They are by nature, romantic and airy. It should be noted that some of these fae may prefer to be called Dusk Fae though, this is rare in the modern ages. Sunset fae all have pink skin in varying shades though the most common appears to be rose pink and pastel pink. Their hair once again comes in all shades of pink known to mortal man. Their eyes, however, are more restricted. Their eyes can only be pink or red. The shade of pink is often debated about even though it is the most common colour. Sunset fae prefer to keep their hair short but, as with all peoples, this varies from person to person. As a whole, the tend to like loose clothing and flowing sheer materials. They may decorate themselves with flowers, gems or the odd dash of gold. The gems and metals are used to catch the light and give the fae a shimmery look. Although these fae rank the lowest in their people's hierarchy, they don't appear to mind.
The next kind of Fae are the fae who embody decay. The aptly named Decay fae are creatures of the daying leaf and ( )own grass. They are the death of all things mortal, even the very planet. They were once the proud and powerful Unseelie court of Winter paired with their ( )ethern, the Life Fae Court of Summer. The proud Unseelie have since fallen from grace. These fae all have varying shades of golden or ( )onze skin ranging from natural skintones found in wood elves and sun elves, to literal yellow. Their hair is all shades of blonde or copper with the occasional ( )own haired fae. Their eyes are all golden, ( )own or orange in colour. Decay fae often have long hair though, they tend to tie it back or decorate it in intricate ( )aids. They've been know to be much more expressive with their hairstyles than the other fae groups. This is, perhaps, because they dress more simply. They like form fitting clothes that are often decoated with ( )owning leaves. They use ( )anch like patterns and earthy themes on their clothing and may incorperate many belts and gloves. These fae are the main workers of their kind. Less inclined to use magic and more likely to use ( )ute force, they are also excellent fighters.
In the middle of the classes are the beautiful middle class Water Fae. These are the beings who embody the seas and lakes and rivers of Edge. They are some of the most powerful healers we have ever known on this planet and I am very glad to of know some such people. By nature water fae are friendly to strangers and have a typically outgoing personality. All water fae have some varient of blue coloured skin. The most common shades are the lighter tones while darker blues to deep indigo are rather rare. Their hair, much like their skin, can be all shades of blue, indigo and sometimes even aqua. Their eyes are much the same: blue, indigo, aqua or grey. Water fae like to keep their hair long and flowing usually in thick waves or curls as if to capture the ocean. They tend to favour long flowing gowns made from sheer fa( )ics or silk. They decorate themselves in strings of pearls and seashells or even jewels they have found. Water fae love to wear jewelery of all kinds be it silver necklaces or belts of painted beads. The water fae make some of the best artists for their people.
The upper class fae, The Night Fae (also known as the Shadow Fae) are some of the most arrogant and stuck up people one will ever meet. They embody the dark of night and the light of the very stars. They tend to stick to being nobility leaving others to do all the hard work however there are some fae of this strain whom take the mantle off assassin or stealth expert. Their skin colours tend to stay in the purple and indigo range. Middle shades of these colours are the most common however paler skined night fae have been seen quite a lot recently. The darker shades of purple are usually resevered for their hair colour. Their eyes can be any shade of purple or silver. Night fae prefer thicker fa( )ics, like velvet, than the other fae types who like silk and sheer. Night fae are known to also like form fitting clothes as well as flowing gowns as well. They also tend to decorate themselves with jewels, beads and crystals. They also like silvery metals and may even include a little black into their clothes as an accent colour. Despite their name, these fae are not nocturnal. There is a very rare mutation amoung the Night Fae that allows some to have wings. This mutation is beyond rare and usualy only around 5 fae have it per age.
The highest class of regular fae are the Life Fae or the Seelie court. These magical beings embody the joys and trails of life as a whole. They are powerful people and excellent at playing at politics with even us moon elves. They are both physically strong and magically powerful making them very dangerous foes. They all have skin in some shade of green ranging from mint, to olive to forest green. Their hair can be any shade of green one can imagine. Sometimes, they may have a yellow om( )e to their hair, or a turquoise one. The main colour will always be green. Their eyes can either be: green, yellow or teal. Life fae like all kinds of clothing. From bodysuits, to flowing gowns to clothes from another culture. They enjoy showing off how much knowlege they have and how well travelled they may be. They always decorate their clothes in floral motifs and actual flowers of leaves. Their clothes will always be in shades of green but the flowers could be of any colour you can imagine in this world. When dealing with the Life Fae it is advised to treat them with the same respect you would me or somebody else of high standing as in their culture they are considered royalty.
There are two sub-classes of fae as I have meantioned before. These are the regal 'Children of Light' and the sinister 'Shunned'. Any fae can become either one of these types through very specific means. Becoming a Child of Light is much more difficult than becoming a Shunned. To become a Child of Light, the fae must of lived a very very long time and amassed much knowledge and wisdom. They must of followed the teachings of the goddess perfectly never straying. Becoming a Shunned takes much less time. Shunned fae are those who have disgraced the teachings of the goddess and turned to the Dark Arts. They had murdered without cause or mercy and thus have forsaken their immortal ( )eathern. From what I have observed other fae treat the Shunned as if they are ill or ( )oken.
Children of Light typically have snow white skin and hair usually with an om( )e the colour which relates to the kind of fae they were before they changed. Their eyes become all a single colour (usually the same as the om( )e of their hair) and glow as ( )ight as stars. Their clothing can be anything the fae desires. From what they wore back before they changed, to clothes from another culture all together. They have pleased their goddess and thus this is their reward. They may only wear white however and can only accent it in one colour.
The Shunned fae are much different. Shunned all have grey skin in varying shades. Their hair can be either: black, grey and white. As they have forsaken the goddess, they may have any colour om( )e to their hair and may dress however they please. Many of the Shunned choose to dress in black and carry on with their misdeeds. Some of them simply wish to live how the please without having to worry about the goddess looking over their shoulder all the time. Many of the Shunned are assassins or members of the Court of Shadows. Treat them with caution.
Teachings of the Goddess
Who is the Goddess you may ask? Why she is Tenacity, Goddess of the planet, plants and life. In the old days of myth, she was said to of created the Fae and thus she is the only Goddess they worship. The teachings are as follows.
1. Never use the Dark Arts (Dark Magic, Blood Magic, Necromancy).
2. Never give oneself to a mortal (basically do not mate with a mortal and do not fall in love with one.)
3. Do not use your body to carry a child of mortal soul. (self-explanitory)
4. Do not change your form from what it is. (do not change your appearence outside of what you are. Bascially, don't try to change your fae type).
5. Always love what you do and put effort into your actions. (once again, it explains itself)
6. Treasure life and love. (live as a kind person)
To clarify, only going against every single one of these rules does on displease the Goddess. A Fae who falls in love with a mortal and has children with them will not become Shunned. A Fae hating people and their job will not become Shunned. However, any fae that performs the dark arts will be as that is the greatest insult to the Goddess.
About the Faelands
The Faelands are a strange place. At the far west of the Great Forest there is a chain of great mountains known as the Verdant Chain. These mountains and the lands that fall to the west of them belong to the Fae. Their lands are covered in thick forest and open grassy plains. There are large rivers cutting across the moors like a silver knife. Ruins galore exist in their homeland which the fae make use of. They do build their own houses when they must but the prefer to make use of what is already there. The dislike most peoples (save the Wood Elves and Sun Elves and specific Moon Elves) coming into their lands and making a mess of their carefully held together society. They are protective of their ruins and will not tolerate damage to them. If you do intend to vist ask the fae if it is okay for you to travel in certain areas. They have shrines to the Goddess everywhere and some places are highly sacred to them. Trampling on sacred ground would be like walking into the Grand Cathedral naked and smelling like a bar in the middle of the Grace's Sermon. It is rude, offensive and downright disrespectful to everybody involved.
Other Important Information
Fae are all physically female as stated before. Thus, no matter what gender the fae is they can have children with those who were assigned male at birth. Many fae see pregnacy as an insult as the goddess is very much against it. Other fae see this as the ultimate blessing from the goddess despite what her teachings say. Due to fae being technically immortal some go on to have hundreds of children over their life time.
Fae, while having immortal souls, have mortal bodies to an extent. Their soul is bound to a specific place in the world and when their body is destroyed their soul will return to that place so they can be reborn again. Due to their bodies being made from pure magic they do not decay as ours do but simply vanish.
Fae do not really need to sleep or eat. The vast majority of them do but, there are some who are utterly disgusted with it.
Fae often form large family groups of various different types. Sometimes, if one member becomes a Shunned, they will become very protective of that person depending on what they have done. While fae cannot actually be related on one another, they act as if they are.
Each group of fae (save the two off shoot groups) is ruled by a single Queen. The Queen takes care of all of her people and knows where all of their reformation points are and what family groups they are in. |
