This is where I'll dump all the information I have about my fictional alien race, the Solaliri.. It will probably be terribly organized since I rarely format anything I write into actual stories, but mehhh....
~~~~~~~~
A basic introduction:
The Solaliri are a cold blooded reptilian-humanoid species which live on the planet Eacia, part of the Eltiri star system orbiting a sun of the same name. They are very wary of otherworlders but have been known to take in refugees, most notably a small human colony who escaped the control of another alien race.
Anatomy and physiology:
- The Solaliri are, as previously stated, a humanoid species. The average adult Solal stands at 6ft 2inches, with no height variation between the sexes. They have a wiry build and barely store body fat due to constant exercise. They are very flexible. The average lifespan of a Solal is 137 years, or 300 years in human measurements. The race are capable of extending their lifespan by consuming a special plant which keeps the self-repair process of their body running longer, which is given to the sick or elderly.
- Solal's more closely resemble humans than reptiles. One of the few visual indicators of their reptilian ancestry are the scales that cover their entire backs, from the back of the neck and shoulders to just above the rear. As they have retained their cold blood from their ancestors, the scales have evolved to convert sunlight into heat to keep them warm. These scales are typically a few shades darker than the rest of their skin, and the edge of each scale can flash with bioluminescence when an individual has a particularly strong emotional response (when scared, excited, angry, etc). Solal young are born with proto-scales on the lower arm which drop off when they become young adults.
- The eyes of a Solal are larger than humans, with the Iris taking up most of the visible eye. The color of the iris is darker around the pupil and fades to a much lighter colour at the edge. Their pupils are cross-shaped and very narrow, though can expand to fill most of the iris when in the dark. They have a third inner eyelid which protects the eye; they do not have eyelashes because of this. Solal's are more prone to Heterochromia than humans due to the 'Free Agent' code, see below.
- Solal's have 4 digits on each hand and foot. They also have a ball and socket joint in the wrist which allows full axial rotation of the hand.
- Solal's have a genetic quirk which is described as the 'free agent' code; A Solal can be born with any colour of skin, eyes and hair, without their outward appearance being influenced by the parent DNA (with exceptions made for the position of the scales and hair). The hair of a Solal may have several different colours in random streaks, very similar to the patched fur found on some cats.
- The Solaliri have only recently evolved to grow hair, which is limited to the head, the eyeb.rows and a frill of downy hair on the edge of the ears. Hair grows slowly and doesn't make an appearance on the young until they are at least 6 in earth years. They are incapable of growing hair anywhere else on the body.
- Solal's are keen swimmers and are taught how to swim before they learn how to walk. They are capable of holding their b.reath for 30 minutes before they need to b.reathe again, but can be trained to hold it for longer.
- Solal's are capable of using Echolocation to help them when diving for food. When an individual grows older or has weakened sight, the echolocation can assist them above ground.
- They have 24 teeth which can grow back infinitely if one falls out. Unlike our teeth, they have one less molar which is replaced by another canine tooth.
- They can drink saltwater without becoming sick; they have an organ that filters out the salt.
- Their diet consists primarily of seafood, vegetables, water and a spongy fungi that grows en masse on rocks, with the occasional serving of red meat. They get their calcium requirement by grinding up the bones of fish and mixing it with their food.
Planet and Solar System:
- Their homeworld Eacia (pronounced Ya-sha) is part of a system of 5 planets orbiting a yellow dwarf star named Eltiri. Eacia is the 2nd closest planet to the star and the 3rd largest, orbiting at the warmer end of the Habitable Zone. The first planet in the system is named Agstora and is the smallest of the five, even smaller than Eacia's moon. Juyama is the 3rd planet and the largest at 74,000km, but isn't fit for exploration due to a toxic atmosphere, lack of water and high winds. Obiri is 4th and known to carry high quantities of mineable metals, though this is yet to be exploited. Proatune is the last and 2nd largest planet, and also the coldest. It is the only other planet known to carry life despite resting way past the Habitable Zone, it's dominant aquatic race living under a layer of sheet ice which covers the planet, it's subsurface ocean heated by geothermal activity.
- Eacia is 2.5 times the diameter of Earth around the equator, about 31,000km. Most of the planet is covered with water, with lots of small to medium sized islands in the south and by the equator, and bigger landmasses at each of the poles.
- The south pole is constantly facing towards the sun and has no water, so the habitable zone for Solal's lies near the equator on the southern hemisphere; they can't venture too far north since the northern landmass is entirely covered in ice and they can't survive in the cold. As the planet has a fixed tilt, they don't have seasons. The average temperature for the habitable region is 25*c. It rains and gets windy every few days, but is mostly very sunny.
- They have a single moon a bit larger than our own, which only has a minor effect on the tides due to it's size.
- It takes 796 days for the planet to orbit their star, which the Solal's measure in 12 months of 50 days, and 4 months of 49 days.
I'll keep adding to this once I have more information, but it's all I have for now...
