Grell had been bullied for being gay for a long time. 'I can't help being who I am! So what if I like men? It doesn't affect them!' Grell often thought.
However in his second-to-last year of high school, things got worse for him. Instead of talking about Grell and just plain avoiding him, the bullies would hit him and yell obscene things right at him. He began cutting to help himself get through this.
'One more year. Then it'll all be over. I can stop cutting. I can find a nice guy andget settled down. Maybe I can be happy.' Grell thought one day. His thoughts were swiftly interrupted by a certain girl who liked him, name Carolina Holston. She was always nice to him, and was really his only friend. "Hello, Carrie." Grell said to her. "Hello, Grell. You doin' okay?" She replied, taking a seat next to him. At this, Grell glared out the window. "Honestly, Carrie, do I look like I'm doing okay?" He muttered, slightly angered by her question. However, when he saw the hurt look on her face, he instantly felt guilty. But soon, that hurt look turned into a look of anger. "No, you look horrible, you oblivious idiot! I love you, and you're too busy being depressed and stupid and worried about what some a**holes think of you to even talk to me nicely! I'm done, Grell! I can't keep crying for you at night!" She yelled, nearly slapping Grell. She started to cry as she sat back down. "C-...Caroline-darling, I...I never knew...I..." Grell started to say.
Caroline just ignored him as she got up again and ran out of the room. Grell went after her, following her to her house. She didn't even bother to shut the front door. Grell took it on himself to do that for her. "Carrie-darling? Please, talk to me." He through her shut bedroom door. At this point, Grell was in tears. He hadn't meant to hurt her, he hadn't meant to be so blind. "Go away, you stupid, gay freak!" Carrie yelled.
Grell was hurt, but wouldn't give up. He took a couple steps back. "Carrie, either you're going to open the door or I'm going to ram it open." When Carolina didn't answer him, his sighed and rammed himself into the door. She huffed and opened the door as he stepped back to ram it again. "What do you want from me?" She asked indifferently. Her face was blank as mascara ran swiftly down her cheeks.
"Carrie-darling, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't've been so blind," Grell said as he took a step towards her and reached out to grab her hand. She put her hands behind her back as he continued, "I had no right to talk to like that. Can you forgive me?" She grabbed the handle of the door as she replied, "No, I can't, Grell. Go home. I can't fix your problems, I can't love you; I can't help you at all. And you can't help me. Just leave me alone." With that, she slammed her door.
Tears streamed down his face as he walked. He wasn't going home, he didn't want to be near other people right now. He just kept walking straight. 'Where am I going? What is my destination right now? Where's a place that would be completely deserted at this hour? What hour is it?' He thought, his mind wandering. 'You stupid, gay freak! I can't fix your problems, I can't love you; I can't help you at all. Just leave me alone.' Carolina's words were all he could think about, besides how he could make everything better.
'I cut, right? And that usually helps. I guess I'll go to where I usually cut, then. Maybe...maybe I can end it. Maybe I can leave here. I'd make everyone happy. Even Carolina would be happy to see me leave now.' Thinking of making Carolina happy made him smile. He decided he would end his life, he would give her that.
He turned to the right so he could head back home so he write a note, a final goodbye. When he arrived, his parents tried to talk to him. "Grell! Where've you been, son? We were worried about you." His mother said, smiling at him. He looked at her, smilied back, and said, "You won't have to worry much longer, mother. I'll be where I belong soon enough." His mother ws shocked at his words.
He grabbed what he needed and headed back out the door, to his usual spot. A gorgeous maze, full of red roses. He quickly fell in love with that color, it was the color of the blood that often spilled out of him, the color of the roses he'd die among...the color of Carolina's hair.
He quickly wrote down his last words, writing of how he loved his mother and father, and hoped everyone he'd known, even the bullies, had a good life. He wrote down another letter that was just for Carolina-telling of how he loved her, and wished her a safe happy life, with a husband and children and pets.
A Grim Reaper watched from the distance. Grell hadn't been his mission, but he had stumbled upon Grell as he was heading back to the Headquarters. Suicides were unable to be tracked by Reapers, and that was often what made you turn into one. The Reaper watched as Grell took the blade and held it to his wrist.
Taking a deep breath, Grell smiled as he slashed deep into his fragile skin. The pain didn't matter to him, he was going to leave here. 'Heaven or Hell, I don't care. Just get me out of here. I need to make Carolina happy again, and that can only happen if I'm gone.' He thought.
Right before everything went black, Grell caught a glimpse of the Reaper walking over to him.

The police found Grell's body, and two weeks later, a funeral was arranged. Grell laid inside a coffin, surrounded by his famliy and former bullies. Caroline knelt in front of his coffin, weeping over her dear friend.
After the funeral ended, the Reaper grabbed grell into his arms. He took Grell back to the Headquarters and trained him. Grell became obsessed with the color red; he even dyed his hair that color.
Grell was furious when he found out his first actual mission was going to be Carolina. He watched her for a while, wondering what he cause of death would be. He was never told that. He found out a little later.
Carolina never had moved on. She couldn't get over the fact that he had done that to make her happy, to be out of her hair forever. She couldn't live without him. She didn't listen to his letter, she stayed alone. She decided she would leave as well, she would go after him.
She wrote a note, saying how she loved her family, how she hoped they understood why she had to go after Grell. She held the knife to her wrist, just as Grell had, smiling like Grell once had. Just as she sliced through her fragile skin, Grell walked over to her. He knelt beside her, and wrapped his arms around her. "Carolina..." He sang softly to her as she closed her eyes.
He took her back to the Headquarters, not caring that he'd get overtime for saving her.
Yes, he had crushes on Bassy and Will, but he truly loved Carolina.
~In the end, they had gotten to be together forever. They were truly happy.~ |
