The Éothéod were a people descended from the Edain that did not go to Númenor, but remained in Middle-Earth. Because of that, they were less wise and less knowledgeable than the Númenoreans, but also remained untainted by Sauron's shadow. They were great horse-lords; their companies were called Éored. An Éored did not have a fixed number of men, though eventually, it was decided that it should have no less than 120 men, the captain included. They had originally settled in the Vales of Anduin between the Carrock and the Gladden Fields (where they first encountered the Halflings), but found the land insufficient for their needs and thus relocated to an area north of Mirkwood. |
