When the Valar failed to imprison Melkor before the awakening of the Firstborn, Manwë, fearing for their safety, invited them to Valinor to live alongside them. The Eldar who decided to undertake the journey west were known as the Eldalië (Elves of the Great Journey). Three hosts reached Valinor: the Vanyar, the Noldor, and a part of the Teleri later known as the Falmari. The elves that refused the journey altogether were known as the Moriquendi (dark elves), those that halted their journey and remained in Middle-Earth were the Sindar (grey elves) and Nandor (green elves). |
