| Gondolin ("Hidden Rock", Sindarin; Ondolindë in Quenya ("The Rock of the Music of Water")), the Hidden City, was built by Turgon of the house of Fingolfin in utter secrecy, while he still dwelt in his palace of Vinyamar by the sea. Gondolin was situated on a plain surrounded by sheer mountains to the north of Doriath, it had formerly been a lake. When Gondolin was fully-wrought, Turgon relocated his household, and made it the law of his kingdom that none who knew the way there may leave it, so the Enemy wouldn't be able to find it. For a long time, this strategy proved effective, and Morgoth had no idea where the city lay - he had never thought Turgon would have his home so far in the north.
