But Makani would far rather end the curse herself than try to run from it. Finding herself untold distances from home, Makani is grouped with three others, one from each race of the Four People's of the Sea to fight on the goddess' behalf to fell the Pena menaces that haunt them once and for all.

Four generations of Makani's family have fallen to Thra Pena, for they are cursed to hunt the beast until either it is slain, or until there is no one left of their bloodline to bare the curse any longer. In a last ditch effort to save this fifth generation, Makani is to be married, in the hopes that joining another family will save her from the curse of her own, and if this plan is successful, her three younger siblings will follow suit as soon as they come of age.
