Still, it is hard on Ji, and even on Estel, knowing that soon Ifrit the Hunter and their mortal friends will be actively carrying out a rescue of the girl Ifrit, which must either succeed or fail without their participation. Ji has never felt so powerless. He finds himself cuddling his aspect of Ifrit as much for his own comfort as for hers. She, of course, responds with such enthusiasm that he cannot help being cheered. It is good to know his bounty hunter bride has a very passionate side.

The methods she employs are rather rough and ready, but effective. Shooting Star empties a pail of water over the fey male's head, telling him sharply, "It will be all right!" "I beg your pardon!" says Ji. "I'm quoting your mother. She said those exact words. Twice. Now stop depressing Ifrit, because that just rebounds further on you, and soon it will get out of control." Ji blinks water from his eyes. "Thank you," he offers contritely. "You are right. And you are a good friend to us."

Once again, due to the situation now being more grave, the portal system is tried on an inanimate object, but the ship is apparently still out of range. And there is no way to hurry the ocean. Estel's magical luck might be a mitigating influence upon the weather, but her powers are not infinite, whereas the sea virtually is. Ji is fretful now, and this sensitive Ifrit is more than capable of picking that up from him. The captain is forced to step in to prevent a feedback loop from forming.

They have not long embarked on the return trip when word that young Ifrit was somehow pushed into schizogany herself, and then thankfully reintegrated, reaches the Firebrand. Ifrit the Huntress has been able to sense the further fragmentation as a debilitating ache. Ji and Estel guess that it is not seasickness, then, that caused Ifrit Heartstrings to vomit repeatedly over the side the day before. She must have perceived the splitting as well, but been unable to communicate what she felt.

Initially it was suggested that Ji and Ifrit might be able to travel back to the mainland via a magical portal, after first entrusting the divining rod to the captain. However, unfortunately tests of the device at that distance were unreliable. Communication with Smoke Cat or Falling Leaves has been sporadic as well, but that isn't inherently dangerous. The seaborn fey, other than Ji himself, showed little interest in a mechanism which might transport them to a land they had no wish to visit.
