"It wouldn't go very well with the pearl and seashell crown, and the white veil. Those have been passed down from my mother's mother's mother, and so on." Now Jonas tentatively glances at her. Smoke Cat Watching is so impassive that even her groom has no idea what she's thinking. "You look lovely in white," he says reminiscently after several moments. "Fond memories of those genie outfits?" she comments. "Yes, extremely!" and he grins. "That's fine, Jonas, but I'm not calling you Master!"

Just before the wedding, Jonas is gazing out at the amassed horses of the guests. Not turning to look across the low fence that for now separates him from his bride, he says to Smoke Cat, "You know, we'll have to do all this over again, only differently. My mother has her heart set on it." "More gifts?" the shaman asks with dread. "Oh yes. And a traditional dress. I'll take you shopping when we get to the city marketplace." "ANOTHER new dress? What's wrong with this one?" she demands.

Summer Wind has indeed arranged for it, and now, with the instant door magic, the trio can come and go in no time at all. Blue Turtle Dreaming, however, is the only other person to whom the existence and secrets of operation of the portal are disclosed. Also, there is such a threshold available in Jonas's village, since being an inventor does have some perks, and he has told Smoke Cat how much his family wants to meet her. They will embrace her immediately; his parents, siblings, cousins...

Smoke Cat receives more bride gifts than she knows what to do with, even after declining those she felt she could escape with any grace at all, and passing on to her clan in general those that might be construed as of communal benefit. She sorts the rest into two categories: those she wants to keep or must keep lest the lack be noticed, and those she feels may be safely sold at the great bazaar to the south. For after a few weeks on the plain, the couple still plan to visit the Arcane Academy.
