The traces led up and inland for quite a long hike, and finally terminated in a building that was little more than a shack. How it withstood the wind was a mystery. What the Snake-Eyed woman had done there was equally a mystery; the place was now clearly abandoned. When they asked around in town, people said only that a strange man had lived there, who always wore sunglasses even though he only came out to buy supplies after dark, and never socialized with anyone. If he was gone, good riddance!

In the afternoon, when they'd caught up on lost sleep and updated Draensil and Elora, Marea and her team created a portal to the main island of the Orkneys. There, the crystal caster thankfully had no trouble discerning Vedika and Tiger's trails, which for the first time split off from each other. Vedika's went uphill, whereas Tiger and his captor apparently waited at an inn and didn't climb into the hinterland. Since the Iretmose sorceress likely did the important business, they followed her.

"They must have been very uncomfortable on the passage across the North Sea," agreed Karako. "You won't have to be, though," Robin pointed out, quickly. "Now that we know where we're going, we can travel via magic portal. It'll save time and be easier on your nose and ears." "Somehow the prospect of facing the North Sea on the first of March doesn't thrill me, either," Marea added. "I'm all for portals in this instance. And right now, I think I'd like to go back to bed for a couple of hours."

"Yeah, that would account for the awkwardness," Mark replied to his flatmate in much the same manner. "I don't think they like technology very much," Marea remarked. "Sailboats, horses..."
