The day before the ceremony was generally reserved for family, meaning a much quieter day for most Witch brides, as their relations tended not to run into large numbers. In the ordinary course of things, the late morning would start with a ritual, cleansing bath, but considering that later, following Oakenling traditions, Brin was to be painted with runes of blessing, good fortune, and sigils helpful in producing a good marriage, her purifying immersion was to be put off until last. Oakenling wedding paint, for a bride, was sweetened with honey and herbs, and Brin had no desire to go to sleep sticky. As the elder females in the family, Ynarra and Elora had prepared a small feast of symbolically significant, as well as delicious, foods which they ate at midday. Then Brin was stripped and written all over in ink of a red clay base. |
