Swiftly Silver Fox apprises his wife of what has happened: the sleep charm, Jade River's abortive attack and subsequent flight, the nightmares, the confusion spell, and everyone's reactions. Obviously, the teens must be found and warned, preferably protected, and Sable rescued from whatever inner demons are keeping her petrified and bewildered. The only question is whether or not to split up. After a short discussion, the couple decide to stay together at least until the Governess is safe.

The sight of her husband in his fox shape calms Estel, and she cuddles him for a while, shaking in aftershock. She remains very confused, however she's wise enough to follow him when he scampers ahead a few steps, looks back at her, waits for her to get to her feet and come with him, and then trots a few more yards. Finally, when she blinks repeatedly, puts her hands to her head, and says, "What was that?", her husband judges that they've outdistanced the enchantment, and he becomes human again.

This is not without risk, as Shooting Star, too, will wake into panic and artificially addled thinking. Yet, the worst that can happen is that Estel might run until she drops. Even that would be an improvement, though, as she would thereby escape the area of the spell's power. Confusions are somewhat like clouds in that respect. Hence, Silver Fox nips at her fingers and tickles her face with his whiskers until his wife regains consciousness. Her eyes are wide with terror, but she doesn't bolt.

Being well aware of this, Silver Fox rapidly changes into his namesake and assesses the situation free of bewilderment. His wife is thrashing against some horrible dream, but still deeply asleep. Everyone else, however, is in the process of waking up, most of them screaming, and bolting in all directions in their fear and confusion. Only Sable is not trying to flee, and the stern Governess is curled into a ball and whimpering. Clearly something must be done, but what? First, wake Shooting Star.

Instantly he reacts, launching himself at the threatening man and knocking him over. Before Silver Fox can do more than recover his footing, the enemy has dropped his club and is scrambling to his feet, turning hastily, and running away with remarkable speed. Still in human form, he shakes his head and drops to his knees in the sand at Estel's side, not too affected by the spell to fail to realize that he's been bewitched. It is difficult to enchant a shapeshifter unless you know they are one.
