Though Silver Fox can't say aloud, "I only smell one human here," in front of the others, he subtly manages to convey that impression to Estel anyway, by prompting her to wait for whoever built the heap of firewood, rather than risking missing that person by pursuing the wrong trail. He further sets an example by sitting down tailor-fashion in the sand, still watchful, but not standing on full alert either. The man is confident that between them, they can subdue one person no matter how hostile.

It's impossible to discern whether the tracks were left by one person coming and going many times, or several people making only a few trips. Mostly they lead into the distance along the shore, but some head upwards into the thicket of trees. Captain Shooting Star consults briefly with her husband on the advisability of attempting to follow whoever is on this island and maybe gain the advantage of taking them by surprise, versus waiting by the stacked wood for the unknown individuals to return.

Nevertheless, there isn't exactly a picnic outing attitude permeating this venture, no shouting back and forth or running ahead. The young people aren't playing around; they've been given a mission to perform and they intend to carry it out, although less impassively than the Governess. After all, it is a pleasant day for a stroll on the beach. They are perhaps a third of the way around the island when the group actually does encounter footprints, lots of them, and a large pile of driftwood.

The captain suggests that they fan out across the beach and examine it for tracks or other suspicious findings before they tackle the tiny jungle of the interior, which will be steeper. Everyone agrees that it would be better to delay any climbing until they have had plenty of time to recover from the exertions of their swim. Therefore, the five teens spread evenly over the wide expanse of sand, with the three adults bringing up the rear. No one truly expects to discover anything, of course.
