On the bright side, this journey promises to guarantee him lots of time to spend with Syeha. They've been informed that Makto is already on board and almost one of the crew, but that doesn't worry the desert lad. He and the boy from Bowing Tree Village have always been friendly toward each other, and if things have been a little constrained on occasion, Amen has faith that having to get along as shipmates will be a help rather than a hindrance. And, again, there will be lots of time with Syeha.

In reality, there is life even in the deep dune seas, and Amen imagines that the true seas are no different, but a person must look closely to find that life, and then may not find drinking water at all... unless he has the talent of conjuring it. The former djinn boy knows exactly how tedious looking out at the same shifting sands day after day can get, just in the first few weeks, never mind decades. So he prudently decides to bring plenty of games, his flute, and perhaps a couple of books.

What if he, or worse yet, Syeha, should turn out to get really seasick? But there's always the magical portal as a way out if necessary. What if there is a storm and they are stranded somewhere? Amen is familiar enough with sandstorms not to take the weather for granted. Yet, again, if things should get truly dire, there's the portal. No, the eventuality that occurs to him as being the most likely danger, is boredom. They say that the ocean is a little like the desert in that it is empty.
