This time it is Amen who is a trifle annoyed. "How can you ask that when you personally received your initial instruction from Moon Shadow?" And truly, the southern girl is a bit ashamed at having discounted this fact in her annoyed outburst. "You will go to the steppes, then? That's not a bad plan."

Syeha cannot refrain from at least suggesting that her mother is a powerful and experienced witch-woman, and that perhaps herding sheep is enough like herding cattle that her boyfriend could learn that profession at Bowing Tree Village. Unfortunately, the desert lad points out that Syura's own son Kanu journeyed to the Arcane Academy to study because the various professors offered a wider exposure to and selection of magic.

He doesn't know for sure how long a period apart this will entail, and now she can't even speak to him by rubbing the diamond-less ring she wears. Syeha, of course, understands all this, and has realized it almost from the beginning, so she is by no means shocked or upset. Naturally, the southern girl is sad that they cannot continue to be together, however she is prepared to wait for as long as it takes. She hopes Amen's sense of honor will be satisfied quickly, but doesn't say that to him.

The shepherd boy would never want to diminish Syeha, but just as he was uncomfortable being what he perceived as passive during the time that everyone he knew was trying to assist in his wish, he will not feel that he has taken on the responsibilities of an adult until he accomplishes these things. It is important for Amen's self-esteem. Haltingly, the desert born teen attempts to convey all of this to Syeha, since he suspects that proving himself and gaining an education will separate them.
