"All right," Ji answers. "That's it?" queries Ifrit. "That's enough... about them," he says. "Now, what's really bothering you?" "What do you mean?" she asks with a tiny shiver. "I mean what I say," he replies, slightly impatient. "Do you intend to marry me, or not? I know you have serious reservations." Ifrit turns to face him completely. "No, Ji, no reservations about you..." "Just doubts about yourself," he responds, humorlessly. "Why must you be so critical of the woman I love?"

"Why did you never tell me that much about Imp?" he asks abruptly. "Honestly, I hadn't thought about him in centuries. It was over for me," she replies. Ji wrinkles his brow. "Not that over if he still terrifies you. I would've understood, do understand, you know." "I know. It isn't that I don't trust you. I didn't tell you, I guess, for the same reason that I didn't go into details about Mother. Pretending it meant nothing was a way to cope," Ifrit says, shrugging a bit closer to him.

Walking out a little way into the desert night, Ji says softly over his shoulder, "We need to talk," and hopes fiercely that Ifrit will follow him that far. Despite the fact that she is twice as afraid of what a "need to talk" might imply than she is of Imp, the blue woman strides out onto the sand after Ji. Neither tries to touch the other, although both secretly long to. "What did you want to speak with me about?" Ifrit asks, managing not to squeak. "Us," he answers, as she'd anticipated.
