"Oh no," exclaims the shaman as she prompts the blue woman out of the tent, "another of the huldrefolk?" "No," says Ifrit grimly, "it is worse, much worse. I'll tell you more later, but this time we'll be facing a type of djinn creature called a Zephyr. She is very old and extremely powerful, not to mention intelligent and manipulative." Ifrit grimaces in the moonlight, with one hand raised to brush her hair over her face in an ancient gesture of denial. "She also happens to be my mother."

She is rail thin, as though made of whipcord, but apparently this is not a sign that she is already having difficulty maintaining a body. This Ifrit is simply made that way. "Smoke Cat," she greets her friend, "you have seen Ji." It is not a question. The other woman only nods. "Will you not tell him that I am here? I do not want him to know... not yet." "He's very worried, Ifrit," the shaman replies in the same low voice her nocturnal visitor is using. "Why do you wish him not to know?"
