Eventually, Psyche appeals to Aphrodite for help, and the goddess assigns her three impossible tasks, the first two of which the girl completes without error. The third, though, is to transport a box out of the underworld, and like Pandora, Psyche opens it; she is thereby put to sleep as it has contained Morpheus, god of slumber. Luckily, Eros hears of this and goes to save his wife, deeming her loyalty and love proven. He entreats Zeus to help them stay together, who makes Psyche immortal.

One night this fear grows too strong and Psyche lights a lamp, the better to knife her husband. But upon seeing the beautiful face of Eros, she is transfixed with joy. Unfortunately, some of the lamp oil splashes on Eros, and finding his wife breaking her promise never to look at him and furthermore holding a weapon, he cries that he has been betrayed and flies away. Psyche begs him to come back to no avail, and begins searching the world for her lost beloved, to prove herself true again.

Eros arranges for an oracle to predict that Psyche will marry an ugly beast whose face she must never see, who lives isolated on a mountain. This is distressing, but there is no arguing with oracles, so Psyche goes to the mountain and marries her groom, who is Eros himself, in pitch darkness. The obvious love and tenderness her husband shows her makes Psyche very happy, and she falls in love with him in return. Her jealous sisters, however, warn her this monster will surely kill her one day.
