| June the eldest of the Thurgood daughters chose black as it was preferable. She was still in mourning at the passing of her beloved husband. He didn't make it home from the war and given it had not been a year she vowed to be a widow indeed as the Bible says. Minnie and Matilda as well as Libby tried to get her to choose another color in the gown but she wouldn't hear of it. She even became indignant. Her mother told her, You are being like Jacob and refusing to be comforted. June not one to sass her mother just shook her head and politely said, No mother I am comforted but this is what I am comfortable wearing. I don't want anyone to think I am in the market for a husband. Her sister Minnie said, Why not? You are a young beautiful woman and your husband would not want you mourning him all this time. It has only been six months June shouted and ran up the stairs. Minnie went to run after her but her their mother stopped her. Let her be. We will continue to pray. |
