"Allow me to reassure you, your Highness, that we really are very pleased to have a new princess among us," Mei contributed. "Something this exciting rarely happens in the women's quarters, you see," confided Su, shyly. "A few of our brothers have married," Mei added, "but not anyone from far away lands. Like Princess Mulan, you must have seen so many interesting things."

"I am Ting-Ting," a tall, older girl informed her. "What do you require?" "Honesty, your Highness. My people are famous for their frankness... among other things. And I will adjust to being here... eventually; Rouran did it, therefore so can I. Yet what I would like to know is this: where do I stand with you?" Khittin told her. Ting-Ting darted a quick look at her sisters for confirmation, and then said, "My apologies, Princess. We are trained for small talk. However, we can be sincere."

Immediately after that, Khittin was ushered inside by a bevy of young women chattering brightly. They were all very pale and doe eyed, and made the Mongol princess ill at ease... until it occurred to her that perhaps the uniformity and effusiveness of these royal girls was as much as mask as the one of stoic honor that she herself was wearing. "Halt," she said suddenly. The emperor's daughters were somewhat stunned. "Which of you is the leader?" This was odd, but politeness was their duty.

And then there was the palace. Khittin felt vaguely sick. Everyone was bowing to her and backing away to allow the emperor and his daughters to greet the cortege. Wisely, the old ruler had decided to keep his sons in the background until the Mongol princess had a brief while, at least, to adapt to this new country. There was plenty of time to discuss a marriage later... still soon, but later relatively speaking. The nomad girl cast one hasty glance at Mulan, and all the walls enclosing her.
