She couldn't, of course, allow Kala Nag to roam free in Mongolia, especially, or anywhere else really, but she needed to think of an excuse now that Khittin had left. Both women were pretending to be ignorant of the other's circumstances. Did Fa Mulan actually know how much of the Mongol witch's powers were gone? Just what did Kala Nag truly know about the Jade Lotus and its potential? Each thought her opponent knew a little, but not everything, and wanted fervently to keep things that way.

"No, I'm afraid we can't spare the men to guard you on your return journey at present. We'll scout around here for a while longer before moving on to the garrison at the Great Wall. By then, if we've failed to recover the princess, I must agree that no purpose can be served by your travelling with us any further." Mulan was stalling for time, now, and ideas.

"Impossible. You should have asked me earlier; it's far too late now," Kala Nag backpedaled quickly. "But there's no point in my continuing on any further toward China without Khittin. I demand an escort back to my home. As you've observed, it is dangerous."
