Ooh, the tension is rising!! How suspicious will Kala Nag be, I wonder, when Mulan implies that the sword is the reason Kala must leave them alone . . .?

"We have to find a way to detach Kala Nag from Khittin's side, at least for an hour or two every day, if not longer. But how?" Mulan asked Shang, in part hoping he might have some inspiration, yet more to voice her thoughts out loud. "Well, the one thing that witch hasn't managed to put a damper on is her stepdaughter's curiosity about the Jade Lotus. Maybe we can work with that," he replied. "I wouldn't mind sharing information regarding the sword's capabilities with Rouran's sister, but...

The witch, now stripped of her powers, was still a forbidding presence. Kala Nag rarely uttered a word to the foreigners she considered beneath her, but once assigned to Khittin, she evidentally derived a perverse sort of pleasure from sticking to the Mongol girl like glue. Soon she began throwing a shadow over even the enthusiastic princess. It was a form of control, and the older woman relished every moment of it. Khittin was starting to wilt under the pressure of constant surveillance.

(cont.) Khittin appeared to be in her late teens, and was quite lovely, though definitely a bit exotic looking compared to the pale beauties popular in China. Mulan thought the girl seemed as bright and cheerful as her colorful clothes, and it suited her; she was charming. If anything, the Mongol princess was perhaps a little too ebullient, but she might simply be nervous about leaving home, or trying to make a good impression. Kala Nag, having been coerced into the trip, loomed behind her.
