Continuing my #Mulan 2 retelling: It took all day for Yu Lien to prepare herself mentally for what she intended to do, so it wasn't until the morning of the second day after the attack of the white tiger that the sword spirit enacted her plan. While Mulan and Li Shang did their best to convince Prince Rouran that the immortal guardian of the Jade Lotus really did know what she was doing, Yu Lien strode past them to the outskirts of the Mongol town. She wore the special jewelry Rouran had given the Chinese Princess, and bore the Sword of the Heroine unsheathed across her palms. As the two women had suspected, the bridal carved jade was the trigger that prompted the sending of the enemy tiger by Kala Nag. This time, however, Yu Lien was ready. Drawing on the ancient weapon's magic, she used her own to craft a powerful binding spell that wrapped around and ensnared the big cat, transforming it into progressively less dangerous shapes until a small kitten sat at her feet. Yu Lien had promised them that, so long as Kala Nag never got her hands on the kitten that held her powers, the Jade Lotus itself wouldn't be needed any further for that purpose; the blade's guardian could keep the witch's magic confined with her own. The Mongol prince, however, suggested a meeting of the minds on how they should proceed, since his stepmother was clever and had many non-magical means of achieving her ends, as well... both through direct involvement and by using people as pawns.

Essentially, she had reduced the witch's strength by a tremendous amount, since Prince Rouran wouldn't have been able to intimidate Kala Nag with his threats had she not been working near the limits of her power and thereby leaving herself open in her own physical location. General Li Shang, looking only a trifle nervous, insisted on relieving Yu Lien of the kitten so that it would be more practical for Rouran to do what he so obviously wished, and carry the exhausted sword spirit back to camp.

(cont.) Scooping up the newly pacified black and white kitten, Yu Lien, for the first time in her long existence, felt suddenly weak and might have fallen had her friends not rushed to her side. Fa Mulan reclaimed the sword, since its work was now finished. In a weary voice, Yu Lien explained what she had done: all of the magic that Kala Nag had expended into projecting her tiger across so many miles had been bound up harmlessly in the kitten. Hence that power was inaccessible to the witch.
