Continuing my #Mulan 2 retelling: "Princess" Mulan graciously acquiesced, and although she feared the meals would be awkward, after the first few dinners together, the four companions grew well accustomed to each other. Prince Rouran was an interesting and charming host; it was difficult not to like him, even though Shang was initially quite ready to resent the man. Yu Lien typically said little, her attention primarily focused on the unfamiliar act of eating, at least at the outset. Yet as they neared the Great Wall, the sword spirit found herself covertly watching the Mongol prince more and more. She told herself it was due to concern for Mulan, this observation of her protégé's future life partner. The promised bride herself did try to converse with proper formal reticence, but her true personality soon broke free of such constraints, and she began to enjoy these daily gatherings. It spoke highly of Rouran that he preferred an intelligent discussion to a China doll. (cont.) |
