Thanks a million, Lexia!! For most of history, getting married was a sky high stakes gamble for a woman, because it meant the end of your life as you knew it, possible isolation from everyone you've ever known, and sudden complete dependence on a near stranger and his family. Mulan will very likely get a chance to explain this to Shang, but we have to have some plot go down first. ;)

Ah I almost missed this and it's beautiful! I have to admit I didn't even know there was a Mulan two, so all of this will be new and exciting for me! I already love how refreshing a stance on romantic relationships, Shang and Mulan are having an adult and reasonable conversation about where their lives might be headed and that Mulan describes saving his life was an easy choice over a commited relationship. Plus this scene you've made is soft & bold and full of emotional energy!

"And, Shang, I need to be sure," Mulan finished. "Risking my life for you, that was an easy decision, but what you're asking of me now, is..." "I haven't asked you anything, yet, Mulan," he interrupted, suddenly out of patience. "You haven't let me. And it shouldn't be that much more difficult a choice. I should know. After all, it takes two people, it affects... risks, if you like... two lives, to make a marriage." And with that, Shang turned and strode away, leaving her baffled and sad.

"Honestly?" Shang considered. "I'd be hurt. But... you haven't exactly promised me anything, and maybe I haven't given you enough time." He reached out, folding her hands into his. "If you let me, I'd like to try to convince you to love me in return, although... if you need some space," Li Shang sighed, "I can back off for a while." Mulan met his eyes. "That's a very good answer. I... I didn't say I don't feel what you do; I'm not sure." Her fingers fluttered, but she didn't pull away.

Finally, he confronted her about the matter. "Mulan," he told her, "you should know how I feel about you. After all, I haven't really had the luxury of hiding it," and his smile was rueful. "That wasn't my fault," Mulan replied defensively. "I didn't mean that it was," Shang said, unsure of how he'd gone wrong. "All I wanted to say was that, if you don't feel the same way, you should let me know." She looked up curiously. "And what if I don't feel the same as you? What will you do then?"
