Thank you so much, Yellow!! Yes, Shang now has a dilemma: report her and himself for allowing a woman to be a soldier, or keep his mouth shut and not mention that he was enchanted and half of him got turned into a tiger. Hmmm... And yes, Mulan's priority is to save as many people from disaster as she can. There's a reason she sent them east, as you'll see in the next doll. :)

OH DANG, Shang knows Mulan's a girl now!! O.o I'm sure he and Fa Mulan will, indeed, meet again--much to his delight . . . ;) I love how Mulan's tactic here isn't to rush back into battle to get revenge, but to get as many men out alive as possible. It shows how much she really cares about her people; I love that <3

Thanks very much, Lexia!! I should probably have put a violence warning on it, though! Oops! I meant to have her steal a spare cape and helmet that would be clean and intact, but I forgot the word "spare", and that made things a bit more desperate...

Normally this would be viewed as cowardly and dishonorable, yet if a superior officer demanded that course of action, what could they do but obey? Their mission was to scout for any villagers who might still be living, guard them, and guide them east, toward the far distant sea. Yu Lien had advised Mulan that the Huns had probably ridden through, set everything on fire, butchered people and animals in a wide swath, but not hunted down all the villagers in their haste to get to the army camp.

No one was left alive within; even the tent pole had been chopped in half. This was no time for hesitation, however. Calling herself Commander Fa, Mulan appropriated a golden cape and feathered helmet to become more recognizable as an authority figure. Turning to the random group of light sleepers who had escaped being killed without warning and hence become her men, she ordered them to avoid contact with the enemy as much as possible, to hide if necessary, and sneak into the ruined village.

Then Mulan wheeled her horse, and she and Khan plunged into the thick of things, searching for the command tent, and rallying any survivors that she found as she went. There weren't many, but they all responded to the charisma of the Sword of the Heroine, and joined her. Very soon it was running red with the blood of a number of Huns that Mulan didn't even try to count, yet it seemed to shine brightly, almost green in the moonlight. Unfortunately, the command tent had been hit early and hard.

(cont) When Mulan arrived at the main army camp, everything was in chaos, dimly lit here and there by watch fires or the torches of the invaders on their ponies. Occasionally there was a clash of metal on metal, but these were few and easily drowned out by the rough screams of men and the shrill squealing of terrified and injured horses. Above the small valley where Imperial troops were being slaughtered in their tents, the village lay ravaged and ablaze. For a moment she sat still, in shock.
