"Who do you have to kill?" Velen questions, although his fingers caressing her face have already told him the answer, and they both know it. Still, the name must be uttered and acknowledged. "You," breathes Catleya, softer than a sigh. "And if you can't, or won't...?" the young Cleric prompts the assassin in his embrace, again putting into words the unspoken truth that they are each well aware of. "Then I, in turn, will be marked for death." Cat leans into him. "I don't know what to do."

"I'm sorry, I don't do that, either, I don't forget important things..." Cat's voice trails off and for a time, Velen simply sits rocking her. "Anyway, the note came with a bouquet of flowers. I thought they were from you, or maybe Madame, or even a plant seller hoping to gain my business." "The Syndicate?" Velen asks gently. "Yes. My superiors have decided what I must do to demonstrate my loyalty and effectiveness, and thereby be fully reinstated to my former position within Chandratte."

Velen leads his distraught sweetheart to a bench beneath a floral arbor, murmuring soothing platitudes and wiping away fresh tears. He leaves her there barely long enough to find a servant and give orders for Madame du Leethe to interrupt whatever she is doing and join them in the garden instantly. Then the young Cleric endeavors to ascertain exactly what has so devestatingly upset Catleya. Wordlessly, she hands him a crumpled and tear-stained missive. It's in code. "Oh, I forgot," she says.

"It's all right, Cat. It'll be all right," he comforts, drawing her into his arms. Of course, Velen has no clue what he's promising will be all right, yet he believes in the power of the Goddess to make it so. "You don't understand," Catleya explains, "I always know what to do. Even if my plan is to ask for advice, it's nevertheless a plan." She sniffles. "But now... this... I have no idea... so I guess I panicked. I don't cry; I never cry." He dries tears. "I just don't know what to do."

Catleya, however, is nowhere to be found, and after a brief while Velen grows worried. He eventually locates her in the garden, where she has apparently fled near the beginning of the festivities. Even by dim starlight, it's immediately obvious that Cat has been crying, and in fact, still weeps! His fearless Cat! The young Cleric is appalled, and quickly surveys her for gaping wounds or broken bones, but the girl seems whole and undamaged. "I don't know what to do, Velen," she whispers.
