Makto and Silver Fox decide to keep to the trees for their part in hunting the scattered group members, as Maia and Estel will be covering the beach. After they've been winding through undergrowth for a while, the southern lad confides, "I dreamed I was ten again, and running from slavers, only this time they caught my mother as well as my father, and I saw everything, heard everything... and then they caught me." Silver Fox hopes it's comforting when he says, "Of course you ran; you were ten."

"You probably wouldn't have if someone had been visibly attacking them. No one was, however. It was all in the mind," Silver Fox asserts. "Then... if everyone else's dreams were as awful as mine... we have to find them!" Makto says, springing to his feet. "Yes, we do. Jade River could strike again at any time. He's already tried to kill Shooting Star, twice I think. They must be warned," agrees her husband. "I wish I had a sword," Makto states wistfully as they walk through the dense forest.

"Trouble?" Silver Fox echoes. "For running away," the boy replies. "You shouldn't have had to come after me. I have no excuse for panicking like that." "On the contrary, you have an excellent excuse. You were under Jade River's enchantment. Everyone was," the older man tells him. Makto looks up hopefully, yet a bit skeptically. "Did you run?" "No, but I was defending my wife. It was pure instinct," Silver Fox temporizes. "I shouldn't have abandoned Maia and the others," the lad says glumly.

It doesn't take long before he comes across Makto himself, and sinking back into the thick bushes, he resumes his human shape. The boy is sitting at the edge of a tiny, trickling spring scrubbing his face with cool water. Just as Estel did with Maia, Silver Fox calls the lad's name in a gentle, low pitched voice. Makto still looks around sharply, but relaxes when he sees the familiar man step from behind a nearby tree. He sighs heavily. "How much trouble am I in?" the southern lad asks guiltily.
