Or maybe the stranger is merely being affected by his head injury; that could quite possibly render him dull and lethargic. And Jade River is definitely slowing down, which is hardly surprising after so much excitement and exertion. Indeed, now Silver Fox does speak up to diplomatically suggest that everyone should find some shade and rest before they overwork themselves. There still remains the matter of returning to the Firebrand, and it's never a good idea to swim when one is already tired.

What makes Amen the most dubious, though, is the fact that, aside from some initial queries regarding their group's means of arrival, Jade River has shown no corresponding curiosity about them. The man has simply accepted their relative uncommunicativeness and returned it with his own. Shouldn't he want to know more concerning his rescuers? Perhaps Jade River has the pragmatic attitude that his life is now in their hands anyway, so there's no point in asking questions that they won't answer.

And he knows that he's not the only one to feel that Jade River is being less than completely honest. All of the young people have asked ostensibly offhand questions that seemed to Amen to have ulterior motives. The only exception is Maia, who elected to examine the stranger's head wound to see if it was as serious as the symptoms he described would indicate. Or at least, their words and actions could be interpreted that way. However, none of them has raised an immediate alarm about the man.

Conversely, Zephyr wasn't Amen's first master as a ring genie, and the boy can't help being reminded of previous circumstances that he's experienced when they arise. In this case, the owner that the once again mortal lad is thinking of was essentially well meaning, but had gotten himself involved with a bad crowd and had to continue lying in order to remain even marginally in control. It had required some fairly drastic wishes to extract that man from his predicament. Amen senses deceit, now.
