All that can be done about the storm at this point in its ferocity is being done. The ship is well crewed; sails have been furled and everything has been lashed down. Uncle Anduin is pitting himself against the fury of the winds, attempting to abate their speed and power as much as possible. Shooting Star's luck is as in place as ever... And before the rain becomes too dreadful, Sable disobeys orders and goes to meet the captain. She lists and cants a little, but reaches her goal determinedly.

That, however, isn't so much of a problem; any sailor from the Island Archipelago knows how to tack against the wind and sail south even when the air is moving west. It begins to spit a few ominous raindrops from the rapidly darkening clouds. They are cold and seem almost spiteful. By now, certain weather-sensitive members of the crew are saying that this storm is "a wrong 'un", and that a mighty weather-witch or several must have turned mercenary if not outright evil. They finger their amulets.

At first, there is a breathlessness, a lull without any wind at all, which is unnerving to the teens who weren't born in the islands, and foreboding to Maia. The sky turns a strange greenish color, and the waves look matte, like lead. Then the first of the wind reaches the ship, and for a while the Firebrand is able to run ahead of it, propelled by the storm itself. The wind is fairly steady, unceasing although it blows in stronger gusts at times, and it's aimed directly further out to sea.

The captain and her crew quickly prepare for harsh weather conditions as well as they can. Meanwhile the passengers are told to make themselves secure, in other words, to stay shut tight either below or in the women's quarters, as appropriate. This is no time to have to worry about their safety, and the storm, even were it of purely mundane origins, would represent very real peril. It isn't the season for such storms in the region, and that's yet another reason to believe it was manufactured.
