Here she is: The Other Magpie, a Crow-woman that I already mentioned in
Osh-Tisch's description. Pretty Shield, an author and medicine woman, described her: "...a wild one who had no man of her own…both bad and brave. ...The woman, I remember, wore a stuffed woodpecker on her head, and her forehead was painted yellow. Her coup stick was big medicine that day, and she rode a black horse. She went to the war because her brother had lately been killed by the Lakota. She wanted to get even, and she did."
In June 17, 1876, the Crow sent 175 warriors to join General Geroge Crook on campaign. The Other Magpie was with them. She had no rifle, but only her belt knife and a willow stick. After saving the Crow warrior Bull Snake together with Osh-Tisch, she counted coup on a Lakota whom Osh-Tisch shot afterwards. Later The Other Magpie took his scalp - one of 11 scalps they could take before their opponents fled |
