Oh, I think that's just the snail-shell-like shape of the sleeve.. I think that's how he pictured it sitting, if the sleeve had indents along the swirl. I really like how it cradles the shoulder like that :)

i only ask because the inside edge of the sleeve looks sort of dented rather than rounded like the other sleeve

I think it's just meant to be like that. Some of the reference pics I've seen definitely depict the sleeves as floating, separate from the gown ~
