| The chief of the Harpys is not allowed to fly, to symbolize the fact that his or her place is with the people at all times. To further bring home this point, their wings are weighed down with beads, shells, and other ornaments to keep them from the temptation of breaking the custom. In addition, the chief has bodyguards to keep them firmly on the ground lest they try to escape.
To make the fine jewelry and ornaments hanging from the chief's wings, there are servants; Harpys who have either been born with arms, or captured people from other races, such as fairies and elves. Humans are highly prized servants for this task, but they are hard to capture, because of their skill in battle. A chief with two or more human servants is considered very wealthy. |
