For this challenge, I read up on the origin of the dream catcher, which is now common to many northern plains tribes, but spread initially from the Ojibwa people. Their tradition tells that Asibikaashi (Spider Woman) taught the women of the tribe to make dream catchers for new babies so that she could continue to watch over them, no matter how far from their original home near the Great Lakes they traveled. Bad dreams get caught in the webbing, while good dreams pass through the center hole. Before feathers were regulated by the U.S. government, an owl (female) or eagle (male) feather was fastened to the center bottom to teach the child the lesson of air/breath, although now gems or beads are often substituted.
I dressed Delia half in Native Ojibwa patterns, and half as Spider Woman from the Marvel Universe, because I didn't feel right exclusively appropriating First Nation symbols for a pale, red haired and green eyed model. Please remember to vote with crowns!! Thanks!!! |
