| I chose the Great Plains White Fringed Orchid, or "Platanthera praeclara", which is one of two orchid species native to Missouri, both being endangered. Historically, this plant was found in tallgrass prairies west of the Mississippi River. It once occurred from extreme southern Canada to northeast Oklahoma. Arising from a fleshy tuber in May or June, the flowers are fragrant at night and are pollinated by large sphinx moths. P. praeclara is a plant of the tallgrass prairie and requires direct sunlight for growth. It is most often found in moist habitats or sedge meadows.
