Thanks MizM!! I don't know how old she and her sister were when they were given as gifts to the kindly mistress, but not very. Perhaps she got fed well then?

impressive, especially since poor nutrition early in life (especially before what is now early school age! some catch-up can be done by adequate amounts of protein by age 7 or so, but after that, it's too late.

Soon Bethany was sold and separated from her daughter Charlotte, but there met her second husband, Frank Veney. She bore him one son, and mother and child were both bought by a visiting anti-slavery activist and sent to Rhode Island. Bethany was free, but never saw Frank again, and there her son Joe died. Later in life, Bethany returned to Virginia several times and brought 16 relatives north, including her daughter Charlotte. She remained sharp as a tack until her death at over 100.
