In the Beginning, it is said, the Great Universal Goddess had three sons: the God of Water, the eldest and most powerful; the God of Earth, the second, and most concerned with mortals when later they came; and the God of Air, the youngest, and most carefree.
When humans first emerged into the scheme of things is not known, but they worshiped these Gods, as well as the Great Goddess, and it was good. Yet they had their own ideas; they felt that the Gods must be lonely with no companions. So, from among their maidens, they chose brides deemed suitable to be given to the Gods as spouses. The most beautiful, intelligent, devoted, and kind of all the girls selected were finally decided on, and the Brides were decked out in the finery of the element of the God to whom they were to be pledged.
The Bride of the God of Water, where all life originated, was ornamented with strings of black or white pearls, pearls were sewn to her clothing, pearls made up her crown. (cont.) |
