"He's aware that I assassinated your father, isn't he?" Cat asks after assimilating the boy's subtle text. "I should think undoubtedly," the young Cleric replies, "but Nimuel likes you very much." They both smile fondly. The last vital message that comes to Catleya is again in Chandratte code, and extremely terse. "Hit attempt on you confirmed. Negotiations with rival syndicate underway. Expect to be contacted in person as soon as you arrive home. For now, stand down but stay vigilant."

My sense is that she is hiding the fact that she left some of father's safety magic deliberately inactive for several nights and days before his death in order to facilitate access by the actual killer." Nimuel then goes on to praise Cat, and Velen's good taste in associating with her, for a few lines. He concludes, however, "Mother's guilt may... or may not... prove to be... useful... to one or both of us in the future."

"Brother," the missive reads, "Some time ago you asked about the feasibility of working together to telepathically glean data from Mother that she didn't want to reveal. Unfortunately, we were both quite busy then. However, in the interim, I've been doing some... research... of my own, in moments when she seems distracted or, for her, slightly off guard. I haven't found out anything relevant to your Catleya, I'm afraid, but I now have inklings... not provable... that she may be a murderess."

Velen is careful not to show his affection, aside from the occasional glance, in public, because it's conceivable that once the rival syndicate hears of the first two agents' failure, they will send another assassin or more. Still, he makes a wonderful "friendly" companion. His brother Nimuel has chosen communicate with Velen by message enclosed in the note Prem Deva sent, as a means of avoiding the watchful eye of his mother, the information broker. Lady Deyandra would not like the contents.

Blindness... which Laelinae only acquired after Sobralin's death, anyway... doesn't result in infertility. However, certain potions and feverish diseases are known to do just that. Has Meretris ever suffered from any of these illnesses? The young spy intends to busy herself investigating this side of the plot to receive the de Seleni inheritance on her own, until Catleya and Velen can return home. Cat chafes a bit at her enforced inactivity, but at least she's not alone in Madame's mansion.
