Do you want to know why I was reluctant to accept that pair of knives?" Velen opens his eyes in time to catch her mute nod, but too late to see the tender smile play around Catleya's mouth. "One nick, one drop of an opponent's blood, and I could do that for real... a legacy of unwilling exposure to my father's work. And if I were threatened, I wouldn't hesitate."

"You would've killed your father if I hadn't; I know," she says.

"When you finally find out enough evidence that the murderer and motive are clear, will that make you content, my Cat?" Velen queries. "I don't know. It'll be a weight off my mind, however; I hope I'll feel more peaceful as a result. What about you, Cleric of Nocturnia? Could you ever be comfortable with a life partner who used to assassinate people, assuming that I'm even able to leave that career behind?" Catleya remains in physical contact with Velen's skin, yet she can't meet his gaze.
