Then there was the shielding of the young Witch's etheric being to accomplish. One could not face the Void without unraveling, and Isfathotep must consider the possibility that her mind might not lodge against that of Meryamaat on the first attempt. Therefore, he needed her seer's talent, at least, to retain some coherency for... potentially... several repetitions of the crux of the rite. Lastly, he must render all that he could access now... not much, admittedly... of Meryamaat more 'sticky'.

...as well as those he must make to the bodies and auras of his entranced subject, Vedika, and to his nonliving target, Meryamaat. His, of course, were the most vital; Isfathotep was quite invested in his mind enduring the coming ritual intact, and that demanded a delicate balance on his part. His etheric presence must be tethered to that of the Witch girl strongly enough for her to lead him to Meryamaat, but not so tightly that casting her mind into the Void would tip him or pull him after her.

Very soon it would be time to begin. All he waited for at the present moment were his own psychic preparations...

Meryamaat's mind contained the pattern of all of Iretmose civilization... in other words, it covered the mad God's instructions for what action to take in any circumstances that might arise. This new independence of choice might be to Isfathotep's liking, but having to guess whether his deity would obliterate him at any given instant was definitely not. Hence, he had taken the precaution of relocating Meryamaat's visual focus to another, a convenient enemy, and hoped that measure would suffice.

Was that not proof that they flowed along with Apophis's divine will? If not, it certainly failed to demonstrate the chaos God's displeasure... which had, on occasion, been exceedingly unpleasant for the individuals involved. Apophis was not a forgiving entity. The tricky part lay in knowing what the God of the Outer Nightmare would prefer, or... perhaps... find least offensive. That was yet another convincing reason why reaching the mind of Meryamaat was imperative for High Priest Isfathotep.
