Later, as they departed the train, Brin showered them both in dewdrops and the glittery powder temporarily shone with light. The illusion isn't perfect; it may be reversed left to right in her mirror, causing our Dark Sister to come and check on us for herself, but that should buy us all the time that I need," Brin explained. "When she catches up with us, I'll be ready for her." Hawkeye's grin was wolfish.

Since the Oakenling didn't currently hear anything in that range, crystals were eliminated, too. It was a mirror, then, and all Brin had to do was "confuse" it a little while they disembarked. Unobtrusively, the High Mistress sprinkled both herself and Hawkeye with something that looked a lot like glitter. Then, after a swift reordering of glass vials in her pockets, Brin was satisfied and sat back in her seat to get some rest before nightfall. Hawkeye silently kept watch, like always.

Brin calculated that the best the Dark Witch was able to achieve would be watching the exits from the train compartment which she and Hawkeye were in, to make sure that they couldn't leave without her knowledge. This was where Hawkeye's sharp senses came into play; if the woman had been spying via smoke or ink, he would have smelled it, not to mention that both were messy to use on a train. That left mirrors or crystals, and a crystal that's conjuring a vision gives off ultrasonic vibrations.

The Dark Sister from the train station had indeed boarded the train to Vilnius after them, but was unable to keep her quarry under direct surveillance due to the personal shields which Brin had made it a habit never to drop since the beginning of this journey. Once she and the Oakenling had gone beyond line of sight, the opposing Witches had to rely on smoke, mirrors, pools of ink, or crystals... any of which can be "fuzzed" or blocked totally if one knows which method of scrying is being used.

"We'll take care not to be caught immediately; there are a few individuals I need to contact before confronting my fellow Witches," she smiled to take the sting out of seeming dictatorial. "I'm sorry to be so enigmatic right now, but when you hear what I say to the people I want to speak with, you'll understand. And sometimes train compartment walls have ears." "Yes, Mistress," was all he said, but his gold eyes danced behind their dark glasses.
