The thief's blade hits the cover of the book of scripture and barely makes a scratch. The young cleric then twists the weapon in his assailant's hand, wrenching the knife away and opening a thin slice in the man's palm. Velen and Catleya casually depart, leaving the man by the roadside, bound with a rope of his own blood.

The return journey back to Velen's and Cat's home hollow mountain is fairly routine. Only once do they come across a person Catleya considers potentially nefarious, and the young Cleric persuades his assassin companion to lurk... he wouldn't dare use the word "hide"... out of sight while he deals with the individual. As it happens, the suspicious man is either a robber and cutthroat by trade, or if he's an assassin, he's not above knifing a random lone traveler to make some quick extra cash.

"I did everything I could," Sevresina says quietly, "however, Alornon di Camparo was a dangerous man and didn't... respond to stimuli... in a sane manner." She sighs. "Often, I was afraid of making things worse for the boys." "All right," Cat concedes, "I can understand that. I, too, avoided confronting Velen's blood mage father when he was awake. Stealth is sometimes the only way." The ladies then take leave of each other once more, the harmony and nascent affection between them restored.

"I couldn't help you or your brother much when you were younger, my poor dove," the Secret Police agent confesses to Velen. "My orders were utterly rigid on that point, and still, I came very close to defying them, and would have, had other lives not also depended on me maintaining my position. So, never hesitate to ask me for whatever you may need." The Cleric accepts this with forgiveness, but Catleya is shocked and outraged on his behalf. "You knew, and yet you did nothing?" she demands.
