"Also," Amen interjects, "I should tell you that, although I'm pretty sure Jade River hit his head again when we were struggling up there in the trees, he's still as strong as an ox and tenacious, as well. At the time, I was half out of my mind with terror, but the man fought me down. Plus, he does have a sword, and odds are he knows how to use it, so watch out." "Did Jade River say anything about why he wants to kill us?" asks Shooting Star.

When Shooting Star is about 30 yards from Amen, the boy finally looks up and says in a clear, carrying voice, "That's close enough, Captain. Stay there, and on your guard. Jade River is here, somewhere, waiting for you. If you come to set me free, he'll attack you while your back is turned." "All right," she replies. "Do you think, if I didn't turn my back and just slipped you my knife, that you could cut yourself loose?" He frowns. "I don't know. My hands are pretty numb by now. We could try."

Silver Fox and Estel shrink back behind the rocks so they can converse without being seen, as Amen doesn't appear to have spied them. "He's bait," Shooting Star whispers. The fox nods. "We'll have to spring the trap, anyway, to rescue him," she says. Again, he agrees. "You go around through the thin cover of the trees and come up behind him. I'll walk in head on, with my sword ready. Do you have a better plan?" Her husband must shake his head 'no', that he doesn't. This, then, they implement.

Together they proceed around the next curve and tumble of rocks, and there, in the middle distance, they are able to see Amen. Estel's human eyesight is actually better, and she informs her husband that the boy has his arms awkwardly wrapped behind the palm tree he's sitting leaned against, probably tied up. It's unfortunate that Amen is downwind, or Silver Fox could discern whether or not the lad is truly alone, or if Jade River is somewhere close by. They must, therefore, assume the worst.

If he were human, Silver Fox would be grinning; his wife hasn't gone back to the rendezvous point either, although, like him, she's alone and has sent Maia to meet the others. Not wanting to lose the surprise advantage of his fox form yet, just in case they should encounter Jade River, her husband trots down to where Estel is surveying the shoreline and frisks around her legs. Shooting Star does grin. In an undertone pitched for his ears, she tells him of finding White Rose and bodyguard Sable.
