For Jade River's injury isn't faked; he does have some degree of head wound and he is at least moderately fatigued. Perhaps the man has, or had, an accomplice or two? If so, they could also be on this island somewhere out of sight, waiting for a signal to attack. Or maybe they quarreled? Alternatively, it's also conceivable that the stranger is still wary of disclosing too much information and thus is keeping his level of magic secret, just as Syeha is. However, it never hurts to be vigilant.

Like White Rose, Syeha intends to communicate her private reservations about Jade River to the ship's captain as soon as a convenient chance arises. For the moment, though, the Governess must have reached the same conclusions and be on the alert, so the southern girl feels no urgency. Then, too, if the man were the bait for maritime raiders, she would have expected trouble by now, and if he is alone in meaning them harm, how and why would he arrange to strike himself on the back of the head?

"I... I'm not sure," the man replies, sounding genuinely puzzled. "That whole period of time is nightmarish and foggy for me, and I have difficulty recalling details, but I suppose I must have. It's the only logical explanation for why I didn't let go of the flotsam I was clinging to during the occasions when I lost consciousness." Syeha smiles and nods as if this satisfies her curiosity, and indeed, that rationale is at least plausible. "You're very fortunate to have the talent you possess."

However, Jade River isn't, in the young girl's professional opinion, exhausted enough for a man with a single magical gift. This would suggest that either he is a much stronger magician than he is pretending to be, or that the extent of his injury has been supernaturally enhanced to appear more debilitating. Neither possibility is a good sign. Therefore, Syeha says mildly, "Forgive me for asking, but I don't understand how you survived without drowning. Did you strap yourself to something?"

Just because the man has been hit on the head, after all, doesn't necessarily mean that he is telling the truth about everything else. Admittedly, Syeha's translation spell hadn't yet picked up any outright falsehood, but that couldn't always be counted on. And there are other points that the southern girl is dubious about. For example, right now Jade River is exploiting his magical talent heavily in order to make lots of rope-like webbing; this ought to make a man with a head wound very tired.
