Amen, on the other hand, isn't convinced that he wants to be a professional musician, even considering how much he loves music and adores playing and learning it. He isn't thrilled with having to attend all the benefits and parties and soirees, simply so that people will in turn come to your concerts. And it would mean living in or very near a city. Would Syeha like that? She seemed happy enough in the commerce city when the two of them were exploring it together, but then she could go home.

Master Sun Son has begun teaching him the lute, on the theory that every well rounded musician should be able to play a minimum of one stringed instrument and one wind or reed instrument, before he learns anything else. And Amen is doing quite nicely. His voice is not one in a million, but it is good and pleasant and serviceable. The desert lad also receives vocal exercises. What the Maestro is truly overjoyed about, however, is Amen's talent for composing his own songs and making up lyrics.

In short, the former shepherd boy has mastered a few basic spells, but some of them only work sporadically, and there are gaps in his proficiency that he can't seem to fill. However, this doesn't disturb him particularly; he wanted to know what he could do, and this is more than he was ever able to achieve before. Amen feels he can offer these skills to Syeha with a clear conscience that he's done his best. In his music, however, he continues to improve vastly, and with no signs of stopping.

In a way, Amen is sad to hear this, because he enjoyed their lessons together, but honestly, they had begun to reach the limits of his powers. He can, of course, manifest water superbly, but now he is also able to conjure fire and summon air. The production of stone or earth, however, continues to elude him; djinn are spirits of wind and fire, and it would seem that his fey powers still bear some relation to their genie origins. He can usually scry, and on a good day, speak through the image.
