It is my express wish." And in light of that declaration, Amen does not know how to refuse without being rude, which he has discovered is one of the worst social sins in the Central Kingdom. He is no less surprised when Falling Leaves announces that she must now search for a political heir.

Later, though, Master Sun Son begins accepting more and more invitations for concerts or parties in the evenings, some of which he and Amen play at, and other that they merely attend. Much attention is paid to "the young protege" or even sometimes, in whispers "the Maestro's heir". When Amen asks about the latter name, the eastern man replies with unusual frankness. "Look, do you see all this money I've earned? I spend it. I lavish it on my wife, and on my expensive hobbies. But still..."

Most evenings they spend alone at home initially, just talking together and getting to know one another. Amen is every bit as pleased with these two truly likable people as he was glad to meet the women who brought about his freedom from Zephyr, and their family members who helped him become mortal again. They, in turn, are starting to care very much for this boy who has been orphaned for over 200 years, and yet has apparently raised himself to be quite an excellent human being, regardless.

"In all other ways, you will be a guest in our house," states Falling Leaves. "If you have need of anything, simply ask for it, and we shall see if it can be arranged." And her smile renders a rather ordinary face beautiful. "Thank you," is all the desert boy can think of to say in response to such gracious hospitality. This, then, becomes the arrangement. In the mornings, Amen studies magic with Falling Leaves, and during the afternoons, he practices blending his music with Sun Son's fife.

This is high praise indeed, and Amen is canny enough to know it. Therefore he cannot help beaming, but gently brings up the subject of remuneration for lessons, which he cannot afford, before he loses his nerve. "That should be no problem. Rehearse with me for a while each day, and you can be my accompanist. Concert fees will be divided between us, and you can give Falling Leaves and me what you can spare to pay for magical tuition," offers the Maestro. Amen instantly accepts gratefully.
