Born Isabella "Bell" Baumfree (1797 – November 26, 1883), Sojourner Truth was an African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist. She was born into slavery in Ulster County, New York, but escaped with her infant daughter Sophia to freedom in 1826. Later she said "I did not run off, for I thought that wicked, but I walked off, believing that to be all right."
